As part of efforts to strengthen the quality of laboratory and clinical services provided through its facilities, PPFN invites applications from suitably qualified and experienced professionals for the position of Medical Laboratory Scientist.

 

The Medical Laboratory Scientist will be responsible for providing accurate, timely and quality-assured laboratory services at the assigned PPFN facility. The successful candidate will support clinical decision-making by ensuring reliable laboratory investigations, effective quality control, proper laboratory documentation, biosafety and compliance with applicable professional standards.

 

The position requires a technically competent, detail-oriented and client-focused professional who can work effectively within a multidisciplinary healthcare team.

POSITION: MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENTIST

    • PPFN Office, Sokoto, Sokoto State

 

Job Type: Three (3) years fixed-term contract, renewable subject to performance, organisational needs and availability of funding.

Remuneration: Attractive and commensurate with experience, in line with the PPFN salary scale.

YOUR ROLE:

The successful candidate will:

    • Conduct laboratory investigations within the approved scope of services of the PPFN facility.
    • Receive, collect, identify, process and appropriately handle clinical specimens.
    • Perform relevant laboratory tests in areas such as haematology, clinical chemistry, microbiology, parasitology, serology/immunology and other applicable investigations.
    • Ensure accurate analysis, validation, documentation and timely release of laboratory results.
    • Promptly communicate critical or significantly abnormal results to the appropriate clinical personnel

    • Maintain confidentiality and ensure the proper management of clients’ laboratory information.
    • Implement approved laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and quality management systems.
    • Conduct and document appropriate quality control and quality assurance activities.
    • Ensure proper operation, cleaning, calibration and maintenance of laboratory equipment.
    • Monitor laboratory reagents and consumables and ensure appropriate stock management, including monitoring of expiry dates and FEFO (First-Expiry, First-Out).
    • Maintain accurate laboratory registers, records, inventory documentation and electronic data where applicable.
    • Monitor laboratory turnaround time and contribute to continuous improvement of laboratory services.
    • Ensure compliance with laboratory safety, infection prevention and control, biosafety and biomedical waste management requirements.
    • Participate in internal and external quality assessment programmes, laboratory audits and other quality improvement activities.
    • Work closely with clinicians, nurses, pharmacists and other healthcare personnel to support comprehensive client care.
    • Provide appropriate information to clients regarding laboratory procedures and specimen collection.
    • Support the implementation of PPFN’s Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights programmes and other relevant health services.
    • Prepare routine laboratory reports and provide relevant data for programme monitoring and management decision-making.
    • Maintain a clean, safe and functional laboratory environment at all times.
    • Participate in professional development, trainings, meetings and other capacity-building activities.
    • Perform other laboratory-related duties as may be assigned by PPFN management.

REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must possess:

    • Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (BMLS) from a recognized institution.
    • Current registration and valid practicing license with the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN).
    • Minimum of two (2) years post-qualification relevant experience in a hospital, diagnostic laboratory, clinic or related healthcare setting.
    • Practical experience in laboratory quality assurance and quality control.
    • Knowledge of laboratory biosafety, infection prevention and control and proper biomedical waste management.
    • Experience with laboratory equipment, reagents, inventory management and documentation.
    • Good computer skills and experience with electronic laboratory or health information systems will be an advantage.
    • Experience working in an NGO, primary healthcare, reproductive health or similar healthcare environment will be an advantage.
